The windshield is the largest single piece of glass on a vehicle and the one that admits the most solar energy, yet it is also the most tightly regulated. California permits a non-reflective tinted strip only along the top, above the AS-1 line the manufacturer marks on the glass. Dark film across the full windshield is not legal, and no shop can make it so.
What is often missed is why the windshield matters so much thermally, and it comes down to angle. A windshield is raked back sharply, which means that around the middle of the day it presents a far broader face to the sun than a vertical side window does. Modern aerodynamic designs have made this steadily worse: the more raked the glass, the more direct midday sun it catches. That is why a car can feel hot through the front even when every side window is heavily tinted.
The workable answer is a clear or near-clear ceramic film across the full windshield. Because it barely reduces visible light, it stays within the law, but because ceramic rejects infrared largely independently of visible tint, it still cuts heat and blocks 99% of UV. A legal darker strip along the top can be added above the AS-1 line for high overhead sun. City-specific guides follow.
