What makes tesla & ev window tinting different

Electric vehicles change the arithmetic of window tinting in a way combustion cars do not. A petrol engine produces far more waste heat than the cabin needs, so heating and cooling are close to free. An EV has no such surplus: every watt spent running the air conditioning is a watt not driving the wheels. Reducing how much solar heat enters the cabin therefore has a direct, measurable effect on summer range.

The other difference is glass area. Panoramic and full-glass roofs are near-universal on modern EVs, and a roof faces the sun more directly than any vertical window for most of the day. Factory roof glass is usually tinted for appearance and privacy rather than for infrared rejection, so it can look dark while still passing a great deal of heat. Because California regulates only the windshield and front side windows, roof film carries no VLT restriction at all.

Signal integrity is the constraint that rules out older films. EVs are dense with wireless systems — over-the-air updates, connected navigation, phone-as-key, and the camera and radar behind the glass that driver-assist depends on. Any film containing a conductive metallic layer risks interfering with these. Ceramic film contains no metal and does not. City-specific guides follow.

The measured numbers

Window film is sold on three different rejection figures and they are not interchangeable. TSER is total solar energy rejected — the whole of what the sun delivers, and what you actually feel. IRER is the infrared band as a whole. SIRR is a selected slice of the infrared band; it is always the largest number, and it is the one most often printed without saying which metric it is.

Note how TSER falls as the film gets lighter. A tier does not have one heat figure — it has one per shade, and the shade you pick changes it.

Avery Dennison calculates these on NFRC methodology, LBNL Window 5.2, on 1/4" (6mm) clear glass, subject to variation within industry standards — they describe the film, not a promise about a particular vehicle. Your glass, its thickness and its own tint all affect the finished result.

Pricing, curing times and the California limits are the same whichever service you are here for: the price board, what is legal on your glass, and what each shade looks like. All work is done at our Sacramento shop — there is no mobile service.
