Frequently Asked Questions
Window film is installed by first thoroughly cleaning the interior side of the glass to remove any dirt, dust, or debris. The film is then precisely cut to fit the shape of each window using computer-cut patterns or custom hand-cut techniques. A slip solution is applied to the glass, and the film is carefully placed on the interior surface. A squeegee is used to remove any air bubbles and excess solution, ensuring a smooth, clean application. The edges are trimmed and sealed for a factory-quality finish.
Window tint is always applied to the inside of your car's windows. This protects the film from the elements such as rain, wind, car washes, and road debris. By being on the interior side of the glass, the film lasts much longer and maintains its appearance. The only exception is sometimes during the shaping process, where the film may be temporarily placed on the outside of the glass to heat-shrink it to the window's curvature before final installation on the inside.
The installation time for window tint depends on the type of vehicle and the number of windows being tinted. A standard sedan typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Larger vehicles like trucks, SUVs, and vans may take 2 to 3 hours or more depending on the number and size of the windows. Vehicles with complex window shapes or rear window defrosters may require additional time to ensure a perfect fit. We recommend allowing enough time for a quality installation rather than rushing the process.
You are welcome to either drop off your vehicle or wait at our shop while the tinting is done. Many customers choose to drop off in the morning and pick up later in the day. If you prefer to wait, please be aware that the process typically takes 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the vehicle. We want to ensure every installation is done to our high standards, so we appreciate your patience while we work on your vehicle.
The number of windows varies by vehicle type. A standard sedan typically has 5 windows — two front doors, two rear doors, and a rear window. A coupe usually has 3 windows. SUVs and vans can have 7 or more windows including quarter panel glass and rear cargo windows. When getting a quote, it is helpful to count the windows you want tinted so we can provide an accurate estimate. Keep in mind that in California, the front windshield and front driver and passenger windows have specific legal tint limits.
Yes, window tinting can be applied in wet or cold weather. Since the film is installed on the inside of the glass, rain and exterior conditions do not affect the application process. Our shop is climate-controlled, which means we can perform high-quality installations regardless of the weather outside. However, cold and humid conditions may extend the curing time of the film. In these conditions, it may take longer for the film to fully adhere and for any residual haze or small water pockets to disappear.
We recommend keeping your windows rolled up for at least 3 to 5 days after the tint has been installed. This allows the adhesive to properly bond to the glass without being disturbed. Rolling the windows down too soon can cause the film to shift, peel, or crease at the edges. During warmer weather, the curing process is faster, so you may be able to roll them down after 2 to 3 days. In cooler or cloudy weather, it is best to wait the full 5 days or even longer.
Window tint film typically takes 2 to 4 weeks to fully cure, depending on weather conditions. During the curing process, you may notice small water pockets, a slightly hazy or cloudy appearance, or tiny bubbles in the film. This is completely normal and will disappear as the film dries and adheres fully to the glass. Warmer, sunny weather speeds up the curing process, while cooler, overcast conditions will slow it down. Avoid cleaning the inside of your tinted windows during the curing period.
After the tint has fully cured, you can clean your tinted windows using a soft microfiber cloth or a soft rubber squeegee with a solution of mild soap and water or a window cleaner that is ammonia-free. Avoid using ammonia-based cleaners like Windex, as ammonia can break down the tint film over time, causing it to discolor and deteriorate. Also avoid using abrasive pads, paper towels, or any rough materials that could scratch the film surface.
Small chips or imperfections that appear under the tint film are typically caused by contamination that was already present on the glass or particles that were embedded in the window before the film was applied. Despite thorough cleaning, microscopic debris can sometimes get trapped between the glass and the film. In most cases, these tiny specks are only visible upon very close inspection and do not affect the performance or longevity of the tint. If you notice significant issues, bring your vehicle back and we will inspect it.
High-quality window tint film is very durable and designed to last for years. The films we use are scratch-resistant, fade-resistant, and built to withstand the heat and UV exposure of the Sacramento Valley climate. With proper care — avoiding ammonia-based cleaners and abrasive materials — professional-grade window tint can last the lifetime of the vehicle. Our films are backed by a lifetime warranty, so if any defects arise due to the film itself, we will replace it at no charge.
Purple discoloration and bubbling are signs of low-quality tint film breaking down over time. Cheap, dye-based films are particularly prone to this because the dyes degrade when exposed to prolonged UV radiation, causing the film to shift from black to a purple hue. Bubbling occurs when the adhesive layer fails, allowing air to seep between the film and the glass. This is why we use only high-quality ceramic and carbon films that are resistant to fading and bubbling. If your existing tint is turning purple or bubbling, we can remove and replace it with a superior product.
The black dots (called a frit band or dot matrix) and black lines around the edges of your windshield and rear window are a ceramic paint applied at the factory. These dots create an uneven surface that makes it more difficult for window film to adhere smoothly. The film may not bond as tightly to the dotted area, which can result in a slightly lighter appearance or tiny air pockets along the frit band. This is a normal characteristic of tinting around dot matrix areas and is not a defect. Our experienced technicians work carefully to minimize any visible effects and achieve the cleanest possible result.
Scratches or streaks visible in window tint are sometimes caused during the installation process from the squeegee used to press the film against the glass. However, these are usually very faint and only visible in certain lighting conditions. In many cases, what appears to be a scratch is actually a mark on the glass itself — pre-existing scratches, water spots, or mineral deposits that become more visible once the tint is applied. Our technicians take great care to avoid any damage during installation and use professional-grade tools to minimize the risk of streaks.
We do not offer mobile tinting services. All window tinting is performed at our shop located at 4847 Auburn Blvd Ste A, Sacramento, CA 95841. A controlled shop environment is essential for achieving a clean, dust-free installation. Tinting outdoors or in uncontrolled environments increases the risk of contamination, which can result in bubbles, debris under the film, and a lower-quality finish. Our shop is equipped with the proper lighting, tools, and climate control to ensure every installation meets our high standards.
Choosing the right tint shade depends on your personal preference, your vehicle type, and California's legal tint limits. We offer a range of shades from a light 50% VLT (Visible Light Transmission) to a dark 5% VLT (often called "limo tint"). In California, the front driver and passenger windows must allow at least 70% of light through, while the rear side windows and rear window can be any shade. We recommend visiting our shop to see samples on display and even hold them up against your windows to visualize the look. Our team will help you understand the options and find the shade that best fits your needs.
Tint removal typically takes about 1 to 3 hours depending on the number of windows, the age and condition of the existing tint, and how well the old adhesive comes off. Older tint that has degraded, bubbled, or turned purple can be more difficult to remove because the adhesive layer tends to break apart, requiring extra time and effort to clean the glass completely. We use professional techniques including steaming and adhesive removers to ensure all old film and residue are thoroughly removed, leaving your windows clean and ready for a fresh tint installation if desired.
Yes, you will be able to see well at night with properly installed window tint. Modern high-quality films are designed to maintain good optical clarity. Lighter shades, such as 35% or 50% VLT, offer minimal impact on nighttime visibility. Darker shades like 20% or 5% will reduce some visibility at night, particularly when looking through the rear and side windows. We recommend choosing a shade that balances your desired level of heat rejection and privacy with comfortable nighttime visibility. Our team can help you select the best option based on your driving habits.
Yes, you can wash the exterior of your car after your tinting appointment. Since the tint is applied on the inside of the windows, exterior washing will not affect the film. However, you should avoid cleaning the inside of your newly tinted windows for at least 2 to 4 weeks while the film cures. Also avoid using drive-through car washes that blow high-pressure air on the interior of partially opened windows. When you do eventually clean the inside of the tinted windows, use an ammonia-free cleaner and a soft microfiber cloth.
For cleaning tinted windows, always use an ammonia-free glass cleaner or a simple mixture of mild dish soap and water. Ammonia-based products such as Windex can damage the film and cause it to discolor or deteriorate over time. Use a soft microfiber cloth or a rubber squeegee to wipe the surface — avoid paper towels, newspapers, or abrasive scrub pads as these can scratch the film. Spray the cleaner on the cloth rather than directly on the window to avoid excess liquid seeping into the edges of the film.
Yes, we can apply window tint to laminated glass. Laminated glass is commonly found in windshields and, increasingly, in the side windows of newer vehicles for safety and sound insulation purposes. Tinting laminated glass requires extra care because the film adhesion characteristics differ from standard tempered glass. Our experienced technicians understand these differences and use appropriate techniques and films to ensure a proper bond and clean finish on laminated glass surfaces.
Our lifetime warranty covers defects in the window tint film itself, including bubbling, peeling, cracking, fading, and discoloration that result from normal use. If the film fails due to a manufacturing defect or workmanship issue, we will replace it at no charge for as long as you own the vehicle. The warranty does not cover damage caused by the customer, such as scratches from improper cleaning, damage from stickers or decals applied over the film, or damage from accidents. It also does not cover film on windows that have been replaced or repaired after the original installation.

Yes, it is legal to tint your car in Sacramento, but California has specific laws regarding how dark the tint can be. For sedans, the front windshield may only have a non-reflective tint strip along the top AS1 line (typically the top 4-5 inches). The front driver and passenger windows must allow at least 70% of light to pass through. The rear side windows and rear window can be any shade of darkness. For SUVs, vans, and trucks, the same rules apply to the front windows, but the rear side and rear windows can be tinted to any level. Our team ensures every installation complies with California's window tinting regulations.
Quality Auto Tint uses premium, professional-grade window tint films that are known for their durability, heat rejection, and optical clarity. We offer both ceramic and carbon film options. Ceramic films provide the highest level of heat rejection and UV protection without interfering with electronic signals, while carbon films offer excellent performance at a more affordable price point. All of our films are fade-resistant, scratch-resistant, and backed by a lifetime warranty. We select our film brands based on quality and performance rather than simply choosing the cheapest option available.

While our shop is located in Sacramento, California, we occasionally get asked about tint laws in other states. In Washington State, the front side windows must allow at least 24% of light to pass through (24% VLT). The rear side windows must also allow at least 24% VLT. The rear window can be any darkness as long as the vehicle has side mirrors on both sides. Washington does not allow any tinting on the front windshield except for the top 6 inches. Keep in mind that if you are having your vehicle tinted in California, you should comply with California's tint laws, which are different from Washington's.
If you roll down your windows before the tint has had enough time to cure and bond to the glass, several problems can occur. The film can peel away from the glass at the edges, causing it to fold over or crease. The adhesive may not have fully dried, so the film can shift out of position, leaving gaps or uneven edges. In severe cases, the film can bunch up and wrinkle, requiring the window to be re-tinted entirely. This is why we strongly recommend keeping your windows rolled up for at least 3 to 5 days after installation — and longer during cooler weather — to ensure the film sets properly and you get the best possible result.
