Common Questions About Window Tint
What VLT (darkness) levels do you offer?
We offer VLT levels from 5% (limo tint) to 70% (barely visible). California law requires front side windows to allow 70% VLT, while rear windows can be any darkness. Popular choices include 20% for rear windows (good privacy), 35% (balanced look), and 50% (subtle enhancement).
What is the difference between ceramic and carbon tint?
Carbon film uses carbon particles for heat rejection (40% TSER) and has a matte finish. Ceramic film uses nano-ceramic technology for superior heat rejection (60-70% TSER), better optical clarity, and zero signal interference. Ceramic costs more but provides noticeably better performance.
Will window tint interfere with my electronics?
Carbon and ceramic films do not interfere with GPS, cell phone, radio, or keyless entry signals. Only metalized films (which we don't use) can cause interference. Our Avery Dennison Encore films are specifically designed to be electronics-friendly.
How long will my window tint last?

Can you tint my windshield?
Yes, we offer windshield tinting using ceramic film. California allows windshield tint above the AS-1 line (top 4-5 inches) at any darkness, and the remaining windshield must allow 70% VLT. Ceramic film is required for windshields due to its superior optical clarity.
How to read a window film spec sheet
Three numbers appear on nearly every film datasheet, they measure different things, and they are quoted interchangeably often enough that it is worth being precise. Knowing which is which is the difference between comparing films and comparing marketing.
VLT — Visible Light Transmission
The percentage of visible light that passes through. This is the only one of the three that the law cares about, and the only one your eyes register as “darkness”. A 70% VLT film looks nearly clear; a 5% film is limo dark. VLT tells you almost nothing about heat.
IRR — Infrared Rejection
The percentage of infrared energy blocked, usually measured across a narrow slice of the infrared band. This is the number most often advertised, because it is the largest and most flattering. It is real, but it describes one portion of the spectrum rather than total heat, so it consistently overstates what you will actually feel.
TSER — Total Solar Energy Rejected
The percentage of the sun's total energy — visible, infrared and ultraviolet combined — that the film keeps out. This is the honest comfort number and the one to compare across brands. It is always lower than the IRR figure for the same film, often by twenty or thirty points.
The practical rule: compare films on TSER, check VLT for legality and looks, and treat a headline infrared percentage as the least informative of the three. If a shop quotes only an IRR figure, ask for the TSER. If two films have the same TSER, the darker one is not rejecting more heat — it is just darker.
What changes from one vehicle to the next
Film is only half the job. The glass it goes onto varies more than most people expect, and those differences drive both what is possible and what a job costs.
Sedans and coupes
The most straightforward glass on the road, with one exception: coupes and fastbacks often have steeply curved rear glass in a single large pane. Curved glass requires the film to be heat-shrunk to shape before it goes on, which is where skill shows. A flat pattern forced onto curved glass fingers and creases at the edges.
SUVs, crossovers and minivans
More glass, more panes, and usually factory privacy glass behind the front seats. That privacy glass is dyed during manufacture — it is not film, and dyeing does comparatively little for infrared. This is why a vehicle with very dark rear windows can still cook, and why adding film over privacy glass is not redundant.
Pickup trucks
The rear window sits close behind the occupants, so heat coming through it is felt directly rather than diffused down a long cabin. Sliding rear windows add a complication: the moving pane and its track need handling separately, and the frame limits how close film can run to the edge.
EVs and vehicles with panoramic roofs
A glass roof faces the sun more directly than any vertical window for most of the day, making it the dominant heat path on vehicles that have one. California regulates only the windshield and front side windows, so roof film carries no darkness limit. Non-metallic film matters more here than anywhere: EVs are dense with wireless systems, and a conductive layer across the glass is a genuine risk to them.
Anything with cameras or sensors behind the glass
Lane-keeping, adaptive cruise and automatic braking generally read the road through a housing at the top of the windshield. Film does not go over those sensor windows. On the rear glass, defroster lines are the constraint — they sit on the inside surface, exactly where film is applied, so film must be worked over them without lifting or scoring them. Cutting on the glass rather than to a pattern is how those lines get damaged.
Older and classic vehicles
Older glass is often flatter and simpler to work with, but the surrounding trim and seals are usually more brittle than on a modern car. Aged glass may also carry the remains of previous film, and old adhesive removal is a separate job from installation — frequently the longer half of the two.
