This is a question almost every new customer asks, and it comes from a reasonable assumption: if tint is making the window darker from outside, it must be applied to the outside. The reality is the opposite — every piece of automotive window film is installed on the interior glass surface.
Why Interior Installation?
Interior installation protects the film from virtually every source of physical damage it would otherwise encounter:
- Road debris: Gravel, sand, and grit thrown up from the road would scratch exterior film with every mile driven.
- Car washes: Brush car washes and pressure washing would delaminate or scratch any film applied to the outside.
- Weather: Rain, hail, UV from outside — the film itself contains UV inhibitors, but exterior placement would accelerate degradation dramatically.
- Wiper blades: On the windshield in particular, wiper blade contact would destroy an exterior film within weeks.
Interior installation gives the film a clean, protected environment. The glass itself acts as a shield. The film bonds to the inside surface and stays there for the life of the product — typically 10 to 20 years for ceramic film.
What This Means for Cleaning
Because the film is on the inside, you clean the outside of the window normally with any glass cleaner. For the inside of tinted windows, use only ammonia-free cleaners and a soft microfiber cloth — ammonia degrades the film adhesive over time. The film surface is what you touch when you wipe down the interior of a tinted window.
The Common Misconception
The confusion often comes from the fact that window tint looks like a coating applied to the glass surface — similar to how a car is waxed or painted. Film is a thin polymer sheet, not a spray-on coating, and it requires a smooth, protected surface to adhere correctly and last. The interior of the glass is that surface.
The same principle applies to the windshield. The AS-1 ceramic stripe at the top of most windshields — which blocks sun near the roofline — is also on the interior surface of the glass, for exactly the same reason.
